About Cindy

The story behind the stories

Cindy Pesek

Cindy Pesek is a Michigan-based author, storyteller, and lover of books. She has always been a voracious reader — taking out stacks of books from the local library every week — and a lifelong writer of poetry and plays.

In 2012, a house fire destroyed everything, including all of Cindy's writings. It seemed like that creative chapter was over. But inspiration has a way of finding us again.

The Writing Journey

While directing a local community readers theatre troupe, Cindy encouraged the actors to write their own stories. That meant she had to write, too. She became the group's playwright, crafting pieces that reflected their lives — older, but very much alive.

Then came the thought: what fun it would be for her grandchildren to read books she had written. She was on a creative high and thought, “Why not?”

Papa Chuck's Garden was easily written since Cindy lived with the star of the book — Master Gardener Papa Chuck himself. Finding an illustrator was painstaking until, by happenstance and good fortune, she met collage artist Jeanne Styczinski. When the COVID shutdown canceled all of Jeanne's commitments, she suddenly had time to illustrate, and a beautiful partnership was born.

Together, Cindy and Jeanne have produced three hardback picture books: Papa Chuck's Garden, Max and Mr. Gene The Syrup Man (2023 Michigan Notable Book Award Nominee), and The Bees of Sweet Pea Farm.
